Pain Management: What To Do First
When should you do something about the pain that you are facing? As a new mother, one of the most common things for
her to do is to worry if the child needs to visit a doctor. They rolled off onto the floor from the couch. They
spit up for the third meal in a row. They often are concerned about the simplest of things to the most common
conditions. Yet, understanding pain and understanding illness are things you absolutely must take into
consideration. When it comes to pain, understanding the need that you have is essential.
Pain is a trigger that comes from the nerve endings to the brain. The more troublesome the pain is, the more
intense the pain message that the brain sends to you. For example, if you place your hand on the burner of a hot
stove, your nerves instantly send a message to your brain and the brain tells you to move your hand. The pain
continues, though, alerting you to the need that you have to remove your hand and then take care of what injury is
on it.
That’s where the decision process comes in. How will you handle the pain that you are experiencing? How do you know
when you need to take care of the problem? How does a new mother know when it is necessary to take her baby to the
hospital or when it is okay to just let him have a good night’s rest? These questions are often hard to answer, but
you can let pain be a bit of a helping hand.
For example, the more painful that the injury is, the more immediate the pain is, the more important it is for you
to seek attention. Often, the body will tell you through how intense the pain is the seriousness of the injury and
therefore the need that you have to seek out the solution to your condition. The pain management that you take on
is then up to you to decide on.
Of course, it is important that common sense play a role in the process of decisions about pain management as well.
Sometimes, pain that is so intense will cause the body’s adrenaline to kick in, giving you the ability to handle
the pain to resolve the problem. In this case, it may not be easy to get a clear understanding of what has
happened.
