Pregnancy and Pain Management
When it comes to pain management during pregnancy, think about your options long before you head into the delivery
room. Many women are looking for more methods to handling pain during child birth than the conventional pain
medications that are administered. The decision to handle the pain of birth is something that only you can decide
on, though. If you wish to go through the process in the most natural method possible and you really want to keep
yourself off of mediations, then you can do that. You may want to consider pain management choices, though.
The fact is that there are a number of different types of medication and treatments that you can select. You don’t
have to have medications that can cause pain for you or for your child.
Consider these things:
First, to handle the first pangs of contractions, there are a number of things that you can do so that you don’t
have to medicate yourself. A hot shower or a nice massage will help you to handle those first minutes of pain.
Some women are experimenting with various types of birth such as underwater birth in which there is less pain and
the process is much more natural to the body and the baby. You can explore a number of these pain management
techniques to help you to avoid the pain of child birth.
When it comes to medication, you need to explore the types of medications that can and will be used. Some
medications can cause problems for the baby. Remember he or she is still taking in anything that you are. Other
medications will numb the area where the contractions are coming without harming the child in anyway but reducing
your experience of pain. There are a number of different choices to make.
Before heading into labor, talk with your doctor about the pain management techniques that he or she recommends.
Then, do your own research to understand what the consequences of taking those medications may be. This is a step
that not all doctors will talk about prior to your child’s birth. If you don’t talk about it, don’t assume that
they know what your plans are.
Remember too that you can have a back up plan if in fact the pain of childbirth does become too much for you. Talk
with your doctor and also the nurses at the hospital where you will deliver the baby. They will be able to tell you
everything that you need to do to insure that your wishes are met during the birth of your child.
