Don’t Deny Yourself – Just Substitute Your Way to a Few Less
Pounds
With more food choices than ever before, there is no reason why the modern dieter must starve. In fact, you really
don't have to deny yourself much of anything anymore. Simply substitute your way to a few less pounds. Here are
some tips for finding the best substitutes so you can steadily work your way to a few less pounds.
Butter – Replace this Fat with New Substitutes
Butter gives many of our favorite foods their delightful tastes and flavors. But it is also impossibly fatty and
not all that healthy for our hearts. There are many easy ways to substitute butter, but it will depend on the dish
you are preparing. Of course, there are many low fat butter substitutes, and many of these will work fine in
traditional dishes that require melted butter. For dishes which use butter as a condiment, there are many items
that can be used to replace it, including fruit preservatives (on taste), low fat sour cream or salsa (on baked
potatoes), or olive oil (for spreading on bread or cooking certain dishes).
Sugary Drinks – Finding Alternatives to These Secret Diet Saboteurs
Sugary drinks, including soda, overly sweetened iced teas, flavored coffees, and many alcoholic drinks are laden
with calories. Even certain fruit juices are chockfull of artificial sweeteners and corn syrup. Cut these sugary
drinks from your diet and you will find your diet working for you and not against you. In fact, many people do not
realize the impact that soft drinks can have on their diets. Switch to diet, or better yet, avoid the artificial
sweeteners and opt for an iced tea that you can sweeten to taste, real fruit juices, and of course, the classic
tall glass of iced water with lemon. Make this switch and you will find your diet working for you.
The Yogurt and Sour Cream Connection
It may sound strange to you at first, but did you know that you can often replace high fat sour cream with plain
yogurt, and not miss a beat? Surprisingly, you do not lose much in flavor at all when you use plain yogurt with
sour cream. Use the yogurt and sour cream connection to your advantage. Chances are, you will not miss your sour
cream one bit on those enchiladas or whatever other dish calls for sour cream.
The Salsa Challenge – How Many Replacements Can You Make?
Dieticians and “foodies” alike have celebrated the popularity of salsa. Salsa is naturally low in fat and chock
full of things that are good for your body. So rejoice by seeing how many salsa connections you can find. You can
use salsa to spruce up many different dishes, including baked potatoes, casseroles, burritos, sandwiches, and many
other dishes.
Cut Out the Cheese, or Switch to At Least Switch to a Low Fat Version
If you are a cheese lover, it can certainly be difficult to diet effectively. After all, so many delicious snacks
and dishes use cheese as a main flavoring ingredient. You can avoid the fat of cheese by substituting all or part
of it. Don't deny yourself that plate of nachos if you simply find yourself craving it. Simply find alternatives,
such as salsa, refried beans, and low fat sour cream to create flavor, rather than simply relying on cheese. Of
course, you don't have to cut out cheese from your diet entirely. That is simply asking too much and setting your
self up for failure. Use low fat cheeses such as partly skim mozzarella, and take advantage of flavorful dried
cheeses such as feta and goat's cheese to give your food flavor.
