Treatment of Hypothyroidism
The treatment for hypothyroidism is usually quite easy and effective, consisting of beginning a regiment of thyroid
hormone pills such as Levothyroxine once a day. The particular medication is a synthetic form of the T-4 hormone
and comes in multiple strengths so that the appropriate dosage for each patient is usually possible. It’s important
for the physical to keep a close watch on the patient for the first month, and possibly adjust the dosage until the
proper dosage is achieved. The dosage should also be re-evaluated annually.
For some people, the simple approach does not work, and occasionally the correct dosage becomes difficult to
pinpoint. For those cases, an examination and blood tests are required more frequently. In addition, some thyroid
medications do not work on some patients while the same medication will be successful with another patient. In
order to achieve the best results, it’s important to feel comfortable discussing your blood hormone tests,
symptoms, and any other problems you may be having with your doctor.
The goal of the treatment is to make you feel better, make your body last longer, reduce or eliminate the potential
for heart disease and osteoporosis combined with returning your blood levels to a normal range. For those times
when it isn’t easy to do, you need a physician who is willing to take the time to work with you as you work
together to explore different dosages and various medications in order to achieve the best results.
Some patients may notice a difference in one or two weeks, but for others it may take a month or two before there
is any noticeable difference. Because of the rate at which each patient responds to treatment, it’s important for a
person with hypothyroidism to report any changes, positive or negative, to the doctor so that he or she can
evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment plan and make adjustments as needed.
If the plan isn’t working as well as expected, adjustments in dosage or alternative treatments can be reviewed. The
goal is to get your thyroid hormones back to a normal level, and that can only be accomplished under the
supervision of your doctor. Working side by side with your health care provider greatly enhances the rate of
success.
